Higher Ground 1997

Higher Ground 1997
When word spread that Barbra Streisand was going to do a spiritual album, some people thought it was a goof. Streisand singing "Amazing Grace" -- ha, ha, ha! Well, Barbra wasn't kidding. She opted not to do "Amazing Grace," but she was inspired by the gospel music she heard at her friend, Virginia Kelley's (President Clinton's mother) funeral in Arkansas, to explore this kind of music. Unlike other singers, though, Barbra had a broader definition of inspirational music. And like the French album and the classical album, Barbra rose to the occasion to deliver a first-rate album of spiritual, inspirational music. Thoughtful ballads like "Higher Ground" and "Circle" were reminiscent of Barbra's Songbird era. But it was the big numbers where Barbra really let loose, "On Holy Ground," "The Water Is Wide/Deep River," and "Avinu Malkeinu," the latter a Hebrew song for the High Holy days. The one song that has nothing to do with the album's theme is the popular duet she did with Celine Dion, "Tell Him." Undiscovered gem: "If I Could," another song for Jason
