Love Is the Answer 2009

Love Is the Answer 2009
For a long time, Streisand fans had hoped that Barbra would return to her cabaret roots to do an album without a big orchestra or band, just an intimate combo like she had backing her at the Bon Soir. For the first time in her career, Barbra turned to a female record producer, the jazz pianist/singer Diana Krall, and together they created a lovely collection of standards that showed off her still mellifluous voice and her uncanny skill to re-create a lyric that makes it sound like you've never heard it before. She covers two Sinatra classics, "Here's That Rainy Day" and "In the Wee Small Hours," bringing her own special something to them, and turns Jule Styne-Comden and Green's "Make Someone Happy" into a very personal love theme. Another Comden and Green song, written with Leonard Bernstein, was the poignant finale "Some Other Time." As the album opener, Barbra's "Here's to Life" was a declaration of hope and acceptance, a wise choice for a song set that was nostalgic, but definitely not old-fashioned. Undiscovered gem: "If You Go Away" with Streisand singing in French, evoking memories of Je M'appelle Barbra
