Barbra: The Concert 1994

Barbra: The Concert 1994
If you were lucky enough to see Barbra The Concert live, nothing will ever quite equal it. That said, Barbra The Concert double CD does an excellent job in capturing the excitement and wonder of Barbra's return to live performing after so many years (give or take an appearance like One Voice). Barbra brilliantly crystallizes her emotions at the start of the show and CD with a personalized version of Sunset Boulevard's "As If We Never Said Goodbye," and in doing so, she makes us relate immediately to her emotions. The autobiographical structure of the show -- similar in some ways to the format of My Name Is Barbra -- is at its best when Barbra sings. The songs say it much better than the dialogue with an imaginary set of psychiatrists. Still, it's a minor quibble. Sondheim re-worked "I'm Still Here" from Follies especially for Barbra, allowing her to send-up her own image. Musically, there are high points galore, in particular the original Yentl medley -- a major show-stopper -- and the lovely Disney medley, which she dedicates to her goddaughter Caleigh Peters (Jon's daughter). Barbra also has a dedication for her son Jason, the moving Sondheim song, "Not While I'm Around" from Sweeney Todd. Undiscovered gem: "Ordinary Miracles"
