Funny Girl Original Cast Album 1964
Funny Girl Original Broadway Cast 1964
Capitol Records had been unable to sign Barbra to their label, but the executives there were smart enough to get the rights to record the Funny Girl original cast album. They knew how electrifying Barbra was, how her albums were topping the charts, and they sprinted to record the Broadway cast album as quickly as possible. The show opened on March 26, 1964, the album was recorded on April 5, 1964. One week later, it was in stores. As a result, there's nothing polished about the production -- every track seems to have been done just two or three times at the most. That said, Barbra's performance is a stand-out. The music that never made it to the movie especially great, like "Cornet Man," "Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat," "Who Are You Now?" and "The Music That Makes Me Dance." The ensemble pieces -- "I Want to Be Seen With You" and "Sadie, Sadie" -- are also fun.
