Classical Barbra 1976
Classical Barbra 1976
After working with Claus Ogerman on A Christmas Album, Barbra had been interested in doing an album of classical music. She dabbled with "Auf Dem Wassen" on Musical Instruments, and kept returning to the tapes she'd made for the proposed album. Because she was not a classically trained singer, Barbra wanted to call this album A Work in Progress. Columbia preferred the cutesy Follow The Leider. For Barbra's first -- and only -- album of classical music and art songs they settled on the simple and elegant Classical Barbra. Classical Barbra deserved a high quality production because there's nothing forced or phony about it. Barbra adapted her vocal interpretations to the works of Schubert, Handel, Faure and others with care and respect. She didn't attempt to sing like an opera singer, but did present the art songs and leider in their traditional form. In doing their pieces in her way, Barbra delivered a brilliant and honest album of beautiful music. "Verschwiegene Liebe" (Secret Love) is a wonderful performance, and the vocalise "Pavane" is positively gorgeous. Undiscovered gem: "In Trutina"
